Community transport

Our Mission

The majority of our activities now involve arranging local transport for the benefit of those who need it most. We hope you will find our service helpful and our drivers cheerful and obliging, and that you enjoy your journey as much as possible.

Please click on the headings below to find out more about the Open Hands transport services and policy.

To arrange transport for a journey or to discuss your needs please call us on 01625-878589, send us an email, or pay us a visit at our Poynton office. Open Hands opening hours are from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm on weekdays. An answerphone is available out of hours.

It is usually best to book ahead giving advance notice of at least three days and not more than 10 days.

Please Note: We respectfully ask that you inform us when booking if your appointment is expected to be longer than a normal amount of time. Of course we realise that sometimes you will only find this out when you reach the hospital. To save your driver from an unnecessarily long wait it would be helpful if you could inform him/her once you become aware how long you expect to be. A nurse can pass this information on if your driver is in the waiting room, or make sure that someone at reception knows where you are.

We operate the transport as a charitable venture and do not take a profit from any charges made. Clients do not have to pay for transport to hospitals in the area of Cheshire East as we are funded for these journeys, but for journeys further afield there is a charge to cover petrol costs. Journeys made for social reasons or for hospital visiting are partially funded by Cheshire East and subject to a small charge towards the petrol expenses based on drivers mileage.

Charges are as follows:
  • For an appointment at Macclesfield or Stepping Hill Hospital, Handforth clinic and all clinics connected with Macclesfield these journeys are completely without charge.
  • To hospitals outside our area there is a charge for mileage and you will receive an invoice at the end of the month following your journey. A typical journey from Poynton to Manchester or Wythenshawe Hospital would cost between £14 - £15.
  • For local journeys (i.e. within Poynton) there is a charge of £3 which is payable to the driver at the end of of the journey. If the appointment is lengthy and involves the driver making a return journey to pick you up later then the charge is £6.
  • If you are visiting someone in a nursing home or hospital you will pay a charge based on the mileage and will receive an invoice at the end of the month following your journey.
This service is provided for housebound, frail or disabled people who have difficulty using public transport. We try to accommodate most reasonable requests but please bear in mind that we are not a substitute for a taxi service and our drivers are all volunteers. Criteria are always assessed on an individual basis of need.
We typically arrange transport to appointments at hospitals, clinics, doctors etc. as well as taking people to visit friends and loved ones in hospital and nursing homes. We can also arrange short local trips and outings such as for shopping in Poynton. Again, criteria for using the service are considered individually.
The service is available weekdays and sometimes weekends. Daytime only. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
"Many thanks to the ladies in the office for organising all my journeys to Manchester Royal and to the very kind drivers who took me. I really don't know what I would do without Open Hands!" - Mrs S.

Our team of willing volunteers generously give their time to help to make the lives of those in need a little easier. We are always ready to welcome new volunteers who would be able to give a little of their time to help support this cause. Just one or two hours a week can make a big difference to someone's life. All our drivers would testify to the rewarding nature of their job.

So please call Open Hands today and do something worthwhile for your community!

Please click on the headings below to find out more about volunteering.

We urgently need more drivers to fulfil the many requests we receive. We never like to refuse a request for transport just because we can't provide a driver. By volunteering you would be providing a valuable service to your local community. Helping out is also a great way to promote your own personal sense of fulfilment; to make new friends and expand your social circle or simply to enjoy being active and helping people.

To be a driver you will need to have a standard full UK driving licence. You will also be required to complete a criminal records (DBS) check. This is a legal requirement for the safety of our clients and would be carried out at no cost to you.

As a driver you will be reimbursed for your fuel and wear and tear costs. As a volunteer you will receive an allowance in accordance with HMRC.

Most insurance companies cover volunteer drivers under the social, domestic and pleasure policies. We suggest that you inform them that you are a volunteer driver and do not receive payment.

Please contact Adelle Johnson on 01625 878589 or call into the Open Hands office in Room 4, Poynton Methodist Church in the Civic Hall car park between 10am and 12.30pm.

"I enjoy it very much! It's a win win win situation. I get to discover places, being new to the area; I also meet a lot of interesting people who are very grateful for the service and it makes me feel good to think I am helping to provide a very much needed service." - Volunteer Driver.

Open Hands is a registered charity funded partly by Cheshire East Council and supported by fundraising activities and charitable and clients' donations. Some of our donations come from family, friends and loved ones of people we have helped to care for over the years.

We always gratefully welcome any donations. No matter how big or small, your contribution would go towards helping to keep this valuable service running.

We normally accept donations by cheque or cash. Please drop these into our office, or you can post cheques to the address below.

"Just a small donation to thank you for helping me on so many occasions to get to the hospital. Please thank the driver who took me last time. He couldn't have been nicer. It is a wonderful service!" - Mrs A.
